Pilsen region is a picturesque region of forests and tourist routes. It is visited by tourists year round, not only for active tourism, but also for intellectual enrichment in the form of trips to several unique historical and natural treasures.
Slightly rolling wooded landscape with numerous rivers and artificial lakes, nearly untouched nature, picturesque little villages and numerous castles and chateaux are characteristic for this region. Pilsen is the centre of the region as well as the economic, cultural and social metropolis of the whole western Bohemia.
An extensive part of the Pilsen region region is covered by woods; the best known is the Brdské lesy (Brdské woods) in the eastern part. The protected landscape area and the UNESCO biosphere reserve Křivoklátsko is partly located in this region.
A small stroll through the region to the north offers the Cistercian monastery in Plasy and Mariánská Týnice, the town of Manětín with its chateau known as the "pearl of baroque" of Bohemia and also the smallest town in Central Europe - Rabštejn nad Střelou.
The south of the region is known for the Kozel hunting lodge and the Nebílovy chateau. You can continue to the town of Klatovy, notable for a baroque church with catacombs and the Black Tower. In its vicinity you find the water castle Švihov and the arboretum in Chudenice.
Šumava mountains - an extensive mountain range is a tourist paradise for summer and winter sports and recreational activities. Here you can also visit Rabí, the most extensive castle ruins in Bohemia and interesting Velhartice castle.
The whole region is suitable for recreational, family or professional tourism. There are ideal conditions for walking tours, cycling and water sports. Sports fishing, hunting, agro-tourism, horseback-riding and ecotourism are among popular forms of recreation with domestic as well as foreign visitors.
